Don't get discouraged if the dog is in another state. You can request a pet nanny to assist with ground transportation. Never fly a dog in cargo, ground transportation may take a longer but it is safer for the breed.
Also, I would suggest becoming a foster with the organizations since the foster normally has first right of refusal for a dog.
